A grey external fax modem with a row of status lights and a serial cable.
Compatibility

Works on dial-up and c̶o̶r̶d̶l̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶p̶h̶o̶n̶e̶s̶ headsets.

Built for the connection you trust and the headset you've had since it launched.
Connection

Optimised for 56k

Every page on this site loads over dial-up. The photographs arrive one line at a time, top to bottom, which gives you something to look forward to.

56k Recommended connection
4-6 min Typical page load, with photos
100 Free hours with move-in
1 Phone line, shared with the kitchen

Don't pick up the phone

If someone picks up the other extension, the page stops. Shout "I'm on the internet!" down the stairs, then reload.

Call waiting

Call waiting will disconnect you. Ask your telephone company to turn it off, or ask your relatives not to call between 2 and 4.

The noise

The connection noise is normal. Several residents find it soothing and have asked for it in their sleep world.

Devices

Every c̶o̶r̶d̶l̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶p̶h̶o̶n̶e̶ headset

We support every VR headset ever sold, wired or wireless, standalone or tethered, current or "still perfectly good".

We used to support cordless phones as well. A resident put one up to his face, said "it's very dark in here", and stayed that way for an afternoon. We don't support them any more.

A cordless telephone handset docked in its wall-mounted base.
Not a headset. We have a laminated card about it.

Wired headsets

Cable management by ceiling pulley and a staff member called Bev.

Standalone headsets

Charged overnight at the nurses' station, alongside the hearing aids and the phones.

The one in the drawer

Bring it. We'll find the charger. We have a drawer of chargers, all of them for something else.

Accessibility

Easy on the eyes

Reading glasses resting on an open book.

Large print by default

Every menu, sign and subtitle in our worlds is set large. On this website too. You're welcome.

An old CRT television with a built-in VCR, its screen glowing blue, against a brick wall.

Subtitles on everything

Including the commercials. Especially the commercials.
